    Mesjanizm Stanisława Przybyszewskiego

    Get PDF
The article describes the path of Stanisław Przybyszewski, broadly considered as a decadent towards the messianism concept. Basing on the theory of five world views by Michał Łuczewski, the author presents the writer’s apoliticism and life choices. The article outlines the romantic basis of Przybyszewski’s mindset, as well as the impact which the changing environment – move to Berlin, editing “Życie” magazine in Kraków, and years of cooperation with Poznań’s based “Zdrój” – had on him. The paper describes a significant influence that Juliusz Słowacki’s writing – especially the ones from his last, genesian period – had on the writer. The author analyses Przybyszewski’s perspective on Słowacki – first in the period of editing “Życie”, and later – working with “Zdrój”. The article distinguishes the contrast of influence which Słowacki had on Przybyszewski and Wincenty Lutosławski. The author points to the crucial rationale for writer’s changing world view: time of the Great War, and his financial problems due to declining popularity. This period is presented as the time of exploration – resulting in Przybyszewski’s turn to the romantic ideas of mysticism and messianism. Ten moment, zdaniem autora artykułu, stanowi w biografii Przybyszewskiego czas poszukiwań, zwieńczony zwrotem pisarza w stronę romantycznych idei mistycyzmu i mesjanizmu

On weak rotors, Latin squares, linear algebraic representations, invariant differentials and cryptanalysis of Enigma

Since the 1920s until today it was assumed that rotors in Enigma cipher machines do not have a particular weakness or structure. A curious situation compared to hundreds of papers about S-boxes and weak setup in block ciphers. In this paper we reflect on what is normal and what is not normal for a cipher machine rotor, with a reference point being a truly random permutation. Our research shows that most original wartime Enigma rotors ever made are not at all random permutations and conceal strong differential properties invariant by rotor rotation. We also exhibit linear/algebraic properties pertaining to the ring of integers modulo 26. Some rotors are imitating a certain construction of a perfect quasigroup which however only works when N is odd. Most other rotors are simply trying to approximate the ideal situation. To the best of our knowledge these facts are new and were not studied before 2020

Acute myocardial infarction in an 80 year-old woman caused by left main occlusion with concomitant chronic total occlusions of right and left coronary artery: Successful treatment with percutaneous revascularization

Although acute left main coronary artery occlusion is rare, it carries a very high mortality rate. Following the encouraging results of trials testing the effect of primary percutaneous coronary intervention, more cases of left main stenosis are treated as culprit lesion in acute myocardial infarction. Few cases of primary percutaneous intervention on left main occlusion have been published. We present the case of an elderly patient presenting with acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock due to left main occlusion, with concomitant chronic total occlusion of right and left anterior descending coronary arteries. Successful percutaneous intervention as a bridge to coronary artery bypass grafting was performed with stent implantation, which resulted in the relief of obstruction, the restoration of blood flow and the immediate clinical improvement of the patient. The patient left the hospital in good condition after 11 days, although she had refused the proposed coronary artery bypass graftin

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation: The new option for high-risk patients with aortic stenosis

    Get PDF
Calcific aortic valve stenosis is the most common valvular heart disease in developed countries. Without surgery, the prognosis is extremely dismal. Therefore there is general agreement that surgical aortic valve replacement should be offered to patients with symptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis. However, surgery is denied to approx. 30–40% of elderly patients with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis due to high perioperative risk. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a novel and effective procedure which provides a promising treatment option for some of these patients. This review focuses on TAVI systems, the patients who would benefit from TAVI, and the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure. (Cardiol J 2011; 18, 4: 461–468

Short- and mid-term outcome of transcatheter aortic valve implantation in patients with advanced age

Background: In patients treated with transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), age is recognized as one of the most important risk factors. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether early and mid-term results of TAVI were worse in patients over 85 year old compared with the younger population. Methods: From September 2010 to November 2015, 162 consecutive patients (mean age 78.4 ± 7.1 years, 47.5% females) underwent TAVI in our Institution. Patients were divided into two groups: 1) elderly (≥ 85 year old) and 2) younger patients (< 85 year old). Primary clinical study endpoints were the following: death, myocardial infarction, stroke, major and minor access site, and bleeding complications. The secondary endpoints included: pacemaker implantation rate, paravalvular leakage, acute kidney injury, and duration of hospitalization. Results: Twenty-six patients were 85 or older (mean 87.5 ± 2.1). In the remaining 136 (84%), the average age was 76.7 ± 6.4. Baseline clinical profiles were similar in both groups, though history of previous cardiac surgery (p = 0.0047) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (p = 0.0099) were more common in the younger group, and glomerular filtration rate was lower in the older group (p = 0.045). Major, life threatening and minor bleeding complications, as well as vascular access site complications did not differ between the two groups. Rates of myocardial infarction and stroke were comparably low in both groups. Similar results were also found in the incidence of secondary endpoints. In-hospital mortality and 1-year mortality did not differ between groups. Conclusions: TAVI in patients aged 85 and older is still a relatively safe procedure and age itself should not be a discriminatory factor in TAVI qualification. (Cardiol J 2017; 24, 4: 358–363

Video quality in AVC homogenous transcoding

    Get PDF
Abstract-In this paper the results obtained for homogenous Cascaded Pixel Domain Transcoder of AVC bitstreams are reported in order to show the expected transcoding efficiency gain/loss. A wide set of test video sequences has been used in experiments and in total 19200 bitstreams have been encoded and examined. It has been proved that there is a universal dependency between the quality, defined as PSNR and bitstream reduction. PSNR is described as the difference between quality of the transcoded material and the original material that could potentially be encoded at the same bitrate as the transcoded one

Analysis of Compressed Data Stream Content in HEVC Video Encoder

In this paper, a detailed analysis of the content of the bitstream, produced by the HEVC video encoder is presented. With the use of the HM 10.0 reference software the following statistics were investigated: 1) the amount of data in the encoded stream related to individual frame types, 2) the relationship between the value of the QP and the size of the bitstream at the output of the encoder, 3) contribution of individual types of data to I and B frames. The above mentioned aspects have been thoroughly explored for a wide range of target bitrates. The obtained results became the basis for highlighting guidelines that allow for efficient bitrate control in the HEVC encoder
